The Big Sandy Area Lakes Watershed is part of the larger Upper Mississippi River – Grand Rapids Unit watershed. This watershed includes portions of Aitkin, Carlton, Itasca, St. Louis, and Cass counties.
The WRAPS Project began in 2015 with 2 years of intensive watershed monitoring. The collected data was reviewed and summarized. Healthy lakes were noted for protection. Waters that weren’t as healthy as expected were listed as “impaired”. Strategies have been developed to repair the impaired waters, and protect the waters that are in good health. Now partners are working to implement those strategies. The process will begin again in 2025 when we test the waters to see what progress is being made. Check out the project summary below.
